Exceptional Ensemble
In March 2018, two mothers of special needs adults decided to create in Jupiter a music therapy (MT) program similar to 40-year old programs such as Joybells in PA that use hand bells and chimes to engage adults with intellectual disabilities in the community. They saw this as a way to use music to teach independent living skills in a fun way that builds teamwork and familiarizes community members with this target group. The twice weekly practice sessions led by a trained MT use various modes of communication (colors, gestures, and verbal cues) to say which notes to play and when. Regardless of participants’ abilities, the goal is to improve independent living skills.
